Q & A with Barbara

How did you first discover meditation? Who or what inspired you to meditate?

In the 1990’s while struggling with finding my purpose, a fellow writer suggested I try meditation to help me with connecting with my life’s purpose. Being my father’s daughter, I bought the Creative Visualization cassette by Shakti Gawain cassette and began a meditation practice. It was the only cassette on meditation at that time. Curiosity continued to beckon, and I studied intensely around personal development and spirituality and in 1999 she wrote her book, Why Struggle? life is too short to wear tight shoes, which as been called a “mini reference manual” for life.

What’s a valuable lesson or insight you uncovered during your meditation journey?

A most valuable insight is to realize that every time I meditate my experience is unique in the moment. Being with that “moment” is the practice. Embracing meditation in daily life as a “practice” and paying attention to what I am practicing has been an insightful observation for my meditation journey, as well.

What’s your favorite meditation technique and why?

Mindfulness by connecting with my senses and being present, especially outside in nature speaks to me and reminds me to be kind and gentle to myself. Nature is relaxing and healing for me and it allows me to be less critical of myself.
